From KDP author to building Mosaci
The short version: I hit a wall doing this by hand, and I could write code — so I wrote code.
Hi, I'm Shin, the founder of Mosaci.
I'm also a KDP author. In early 2026, while working on my own books, I discovered the Mystery Mosaic Color by Number niche. I was immediately interested in the concept and wanted to create books of my own.
At first, I tried creating the designs manually with Canva. I had to build the individual boxes and elements one by one, carefully arranging everything to create the final mystery image. It worked, but the process was incredibly time-consuming.
After spending so much time creating just a small number of pages, I became frustrated and honestly considered giving up on the niche altogether.
But there was one thing I could do instead.
I could build a tool to solve the problem.
As a programmer, I started researching and experimenting with image processing, mosaic patterns, color-by-number systems, difficulty levels, and print-ready book generation. What started as a small personal tool turned into a much larger project.
I spent countless hours testing different approaches, fixing problems, improving the conversion quality, and building a workflow that could actually be useful for creating books.
Eventually, that project became Mosaci.
I realised I wasn't the only one with this problem
While building the tools for myself, I started thinking about other KDP authors and creators. Many people have a photo, illustration, pet, character, landscape, or book idea they want to turn into a color-by-number design.
The difficult part isn't necessarily having the idea.
It's turning that idea into a usable, printable design without spending hours doing everything manually.
That's why I decided not to keep Mosaci as a personal tool. I turned it into a SaaS platform so other creators could use the same workflow without having to build the technology themselves.

Mosaci helps creators transform images into Mosaic Color by Number and Mystery Mosaic designs through an automated workflow.
Instead of manually creating hundreds or thousands of individual cells, creators can configure their design, preview the result, convert their images, and prepare them for print.

This was a non-negotiable design decision from the very beginning. When you upload a photo to Mosaci Studio, the conversion process happens directly in your browser — not on a server somewhere else.
We do not permanently store your images. We do not use them to train AI models. We do not share them with anyone. The photo you bring in stays yours — before, during, and after the conversion.
