About this pattern
The canopy is built from rounded clusters in two pinks, with the dark trunk and branches running through it as the only strong contrast. The diamond lattice favours diagonal edges, which suits the branching structure — the trunk splits at an angle and the lattice follows it. The diamond lattice is a square grid rotated forty-five degrees, and the rotation changes which edges are favoured: diagonals now come through cleanly while horizontals and verticals are the ones that step. On a horse, whose dominant lines run at an angle, that works in the subject’s favour. The lattice also gives the page a strong directional rhythm the square grid does not have.
